Frequently Asked Questions
What types of tutoring services are available?
Reading Readiness
Research demonstrates the direct correlation between a child developing strong phonological awareness skills and becoming a highly successful reader. Students are engaged in a variety of age and skill appropriate activities, using a multisensory approach, designed to help them hear sounds and patterns in words.
Basic Reading
Based on Orton-Gillingham methodology, tutoring sessions ensure the mastery of reading concepts. The resource utilized in the tutoring program is accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC).
Basic Reading including Greek and Latin Roots
This program reviews basic phonics instruction in a more sophisticated manner and also includes instruction in Greek and Latin roots which are present in 65 percent of the words in reading material above a 6th grade level.
How long does a student need to attend tutoring?
The length of tutoring depends on many factors including the age of the student, whether or not the student has a learning disability, the amount of difficulty the student is experiencing, and the student’s current skill level.
We progress at the individual’s pace, so one student may be able to learn multiple skills in one session while another student may need two sessions to master one skill.
Most students attend tutoring 1 - 3 times per week, however, many options are available.
What types of students do you tutor?
Tutoring students are of all ages and skill levels including those with or without a learning disability.
Tutors are trained in successful approaches to both remediate learning difficulties and to offer enrichment to students that are not struggling academically.
Are the programs utilized in the tutoring sessions helpful for students with dyslexia?
Yes. Effective instruction for students with dyslexia is multisensory, explicit, direct, cumulative, intensive, and focused. Multisensory learning involves the use of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile pathways simultaneously to enhance memory and learning. Links are consistently made between the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile pathways.
How is progress monitored?
The tutoring program is designed to be diagnostic in nature. Tutors continually monitor progress through observations, skill assessment and progress monitoring. Parents receive lesson updates after each session and a more formal discussion about their child’s progress can be scheduled at any time.
How much does tutoring cost?
An initial tutoring assessment is required prior to beginning tutoring sessions.
This assessment will guide the development of individual lessons and provide a baseline for progress monitoring.
The initial 50 minute tutoring assessment fee is $100.00.
The rate for a 50 minute one-on-one tutoring session is $60.00.
